Rock Out and Eat @ Rocku Yakiniku (Bugis+)

July 27, 2017

Rocku Yakiniku, a paradise for meat lovers, offering a wide range of from beef to pork, chicken and alongside with some seafood too. This place is all about the meat and the beat. Guests not only enjoy a wide arrange of meats but also be filled with the modern Japanese culture. With a fusion concept, Rocku Yakiniku marries their dining experience with modern Japanese pop Culture.

Entrance to Rocku Yakiniku

Dinning Area with Live Band stage
Entering the interior of Rocku Yakiniku caught me by surprise because I was very fascinated by their unique artistic Japanese inspired graffiti walls and flashing strobe disco lights that shone all over the venue. However the lighting was too dim for my eyes and it actually feels more like a disco club rather than a restaurant. If you are lucky, a band may be playing at times and if you have the courage the mic is yours to sing your heart out. Other than that, there is an ambience of good mix of different pop songs from English to Mandarin which made the meal more enjoyable. The venue was comfortably big with lots of seating arrangement.

Charcoal Grill
The waitresses were generally friendly and accommodating, they were quick to serve a variety of meat. Explaining how to order using the paper menu and where we could find the rest of the buffet. During meals they also kept checking on our charcoal whether it was hot enough. Talking about the charcoal grill, as the charcoal was extremely hot, it would only take seconds for thin slices of meat to be cooked. So I had to be careful not to burn them. However most of the meat ended up shredding because it got stuck to the BBQ grill.

For a must try my favourite meat was the well-seasoned chicken because it was very fresh and tender. The bacon if cooked well was also very crispy and was not too salty. The beef was very chewy and juicy too. I had kimchi to go with the meat, I love how it was not that spicy but had a tint of sweetness to it, another option was to dip the meat in the yakiniku sauce.

Fried Udon with Curry Sauce
There was a humble small selection of cooked food items like fried udon, curry sauce with big chunks of potatoes and their delicious garlic fried rice that they kept topping up as it was always running out.

Fresh and Crisp Salad

Edamame Beans to snack on
There were also the salads and crispy fresh lettuce that complimented the meal well due to the overwhelming serving of meat. If you are health conscious, I suggest snacking on their edamame soy beans in a pod since it is packed full of healthy and low-fat soy protein.
Worth Trying - Garlic Fried Rice
I would suggest to give a miss on their steam rice as it might just make you full. However if you can’t go without rice like me, the garlic rice was excellent enough to eat together with the food. Another suggestion if you do not want to eat rice would be their delicious fried udon. The noodle being fried with a good amount of sauce were not mushy but had that bouncy springy good texture upon eating it which I totally enjoyed.

Unlike other buffet places, they only have a limited selection of fruit - namely, watermelon served. I suppose dinning here equates to not only throwing your diet out of the window but healthy eating habits too.

Downside of dinning here at Rocku Yakiniku is that drinks is not included. Drinks were very pricy. I tried ordering their famous Japanese beer, Kirin. For a pint, this already cost $13.90. Being a Japanese restaurant they of course serve Japanese sake too. Price ranging from $25 - $120 depending on the size. I was actually fascinated by their sake drink Kirei Umeshu with COLLAGEN! I can easily assume that ladies would definitely want to try this drink.

Although Rocku Yakiniku is a grilling barbecue place, the restaurant was surprisingly not smoky. Thanks to their thoughtful design of installing the vents beneath the grill for proper ventilation, you can walk out of the restaurant not smelling like you have stood infront of a charcoal grill for a few hours.
