Here is a compiled list of things to know before you start taking your first order.

【Types of Vehicles】

In order to make delivery, you need some form of vehicle. There are many types of vehicles that you can use and perhaps you already have them to start doing deliveries. From motorcycle, E-bike, bicycle, E-scooter, rover board or E- unicycle. The following chart displays the pros and cons for the most common few vehicle you can use for your delivery!

【Rental Bike

Renting a bike is a great way to save cost if you don’t have any form of vehicle to start with. Also, it can be a lifesaver when you are halfway through the delivery and experience a bicycle breakdown. You can just hop on to one of these rental bikes, complete the delivery and come back to fix your bicycle.

Take note: It is highly encouraged for you to download a few bike-sharing app (ofo, obike, mobike & telepod)  in case of a bicycle breakdown or punctured tires.

【Bike Equipment

Accident do happen when you are on the road. That is why it’s so important to equip yourself with the proper equipment. Although definitely it costs money to get these things but do not shortchange yourself by saying that it’s not necessary. It can save your life. Below is the list of recommended tools that you should have while travelling on the road

1. Bike Helmet
2. Led Light Around The Wheels (Front & Back of Bicycle)
3. Headlight and Taillight
4. Reflective Tape (Side of Bicycle, Pedal, Wheel)
5. Arm and Knee Protection Pad
6. Gloves
7. Bike Bell/ Horn

【Bike Modification

If you are considering to do Deliveroo for a long term , you can consider to modify your personal bicycle to assist yourself to deliver better and for longer hours. A little alteration to the bicycle will make the delivery so much enjoyable and easier.

1.Two Rear Bicycle Basket (Left & Right. Put stuff like water bottle, bicycle maintenance tools, Raincoat etc)
2. Bicycle Rear Carrier + Cord Rope (For the big deliveroo bag. Cord Rope to secure the bag while riding)
3. Bicycle Front Carrier + Cord Rope (For stuff that cannot be fit into the deliveroo bag like pizza box)
4. Water Bottle Holder (Easy access to drinking water)
5. Phone Holder (To secure your phone for GPS)

【Phone Data/ Call Minutes

You need to use your data plan in order to access the deliveroo rider app and GPS. One full day of riding can use up to even 100MB so make sure you have sufficient data to last.

Sometimes, you might receive calls from restaurant or even have to call the customer for confirmation of address. Ensure that you have enough call minutes to get through the month.

Take note: It is good to carry a fully charged phone battery charger with you just in case your phone battery is running low.

【Phone App

After you've collected the required equipment from deliveroo office, you will be asked to download these app

Staffomatic: Schedule planning. This app allows you to choose the time you want to work. Once you have selected your preferred time slot, you will be placed either the waiting list or assigned.

Rider: This app serve as a communication platform between you, the restaurant and the customer. Through the app, you are able to see the restaurant address, followed by the customer order and address.

Telegram: Deliveroo have their own ops team to handle all your problems. This interaction will be needed when you meet with an accident and is unable to complete the delivery. Alternatively, they have a phone number (ops) that you can call too at 65 3163 5198.

【Plan Your Work Schedule Early】

Every week, riders have to race against each other to input their availability. As such, it is important to secure a placement fast. If you're late and the time slot that you wanted is filled, you will be placed under the "waiting list".

Be early as the vacancy is based on first come first serve. Deliveroo will send a email notification to inform riders to book their availability on staffomatic. This usually happen on Monday after 12pm.

Take note: You will not be paid if you work outside of your assigned time slot. For example, your assigned time slot is 3pm to 4pm. You make 10 delivery from 6pm to 7pm. The 10 delivery will not be paid.

【Uniform

Deliveroo and Ubereats rider are not required to wear the company uniform when out for delivery. However, it is highly recommended to wear them as some rider we interviewed mentioned that wearing company uniform helps in easy identification. After all, we are on the front line, representing the company image. If you, as a rider, like to purchase their merchandise, click here to deliveroo official online shop website.

【Delivery Equipment

As of Oct 2017, it is required to get their core kit -  external food cargo backpack and small thermal backpack. You can either pay upfront 100% or in small installment that will be deducted in each payment cycle. Deliveroo Office does not accept cash so bring along your credit card when you collect the equipment.

Take note: You can purchase second-hand deliveroo equipment on phone app such as carousell, shopee and gumtree. You can save up to 50% this way!

【Weather

Singapore's weather is unpredictable and it can be sunny all morning and suddenly raining the whole afternoon. You can be exposed to extreme weather condition and it is important to be fully prepared. Here is a list of things that I recommend carrying around at all times.

1. Raincoat
2. Waterproof Pants
3. Waterproof Shoe Casing
4. Transparent Front-Back Phone Cover
5. Sunscreen
6. Energy Drink /Water

Take note: Bald tires, tires with their tracks that are worn out, are more likely to cause an accident in a bad weather. Thus, it is important to check the tires condition before you attempt to ride the bicycle. Poor vision can increase the chances of a crash. Ride slowly and avoid the main road that is designed for big vehicles like lorry, truck, car and motorcycle.

【Location】

Riders delivering food in central, downtown or business district are more likely to make more deliveries then those who delivers in the neighborhood area. If you want to earn a higher income, choose somewhere near the city area. Those area typically have a higher customer demand and restaurant order volume.

【Google Map】

You can cut up to 10 - 20 mins per delivery if you are know the place well. Google map can come in handy if you have trouble locating the restaurant or customer address. However, it can be misleading and you end up wasting precious time, energy and money.

Pay attention to the addresses of the places you have made your delivery to. As you take up more orders, you start to see repeated address names. After a few more deliveries, you will be able to reach the place quicker with the help of your memory. Even without relying on GPS, it is possible to cycle faster and deliver to the places that you have delivered before.

【Waiting Time

Don't get frustrated if you are asked to wait for the food. Often times, food is prepared when you reach the restaurant. However, there are a few occasion the order can be delayed.

1. Large Order (Imagine 25 boxes of chicken teriyaki bento)
2. Nature of the food (Pizza and sushi take longer time to prepare)
3. Service staff forgot to key in the order
4. Efficient of the kitchen

In any cases, if the customer are unhappy with the delivery and wishes to make a complaint, tell them to contact deliveroo support team. They will handle any customer service issues.

【Check Your Orders Before You Leave

Before you leave the food establishment, remember to check and account for the customer order. Sometimes, the restaurant might forget one or two item. Often they will blame on you for not checking. It is your duty to ensure that you have everything before you head off to the customer address.

Take note: Try not be complacent and believe that the restaurant have packed everything ready for you. You wouldn’t want to receive a call from them telling you that you forget to take something and you have to ride back to get the food.

【Delivering Food To Office Building

If you choose the central business district as your work area, you are most likely to be sending food to businesspeople who works in a office building.

Take note: Remember to bring along your identification card as you need it to exchange with a temporary office pass.

【How To Reject Incoming Delivery Order

*This picture has been altered and edited

To decline an order, you can simply click the reject button. However, do note that the deliveroo ops team keeps a record of your order history.

"Level up your priority access. Acceptance is the number of orders offered that you accept. Peak participation simply means whether you are available to receive orders at our busiest times” taken from deliveroo rider info website

Take note: Rejecting too many orders will result in lesser orders given. So make sure that you have a valid reason before you reject an order.

【Tips

There is a "Rider Tip" option at the very end of every checkout basket. Before they pay for the delivery, they will decide to give tip or not. It's all pre-determined before you even accept to take their order. However in some situation, the customer will hand you tip in cash. Always smile and greet the customer. You may very well earn yourself a few dollar for being professional.

Take note: You are more likely to receive tips from the central district. People who stays in the central district are generally more generous. I have once receive a 50 dollar tip from a customer!

【Referral Bonus

For every rider or cyclist you refer, you will receive $200 for referral bonus. This is a great way to earn that extra income. However to be entitled for the referral bonus, you need to be active and the new rider or cyclist needs to complete 30 deliveries. There is no deadline to complete the delivery. Use online platform like Facebook, Instagram, job site & carousell to promote your code. This way you increases your chances of getting that referral bonus.

【What To Do When You Meet An Accident On The Road

Call 995 for help immediately. If you are unable to complete the delivery and need extra assistance, call Deliveroo Live Order Support at 65 3163 5198.

If you are physically ok and do not wish to take in new orders, mark yourself unavailable by going offline. Email them at sgoperations@deliveroo.com.sg to inform of this accident details, time and location.

Take note: Deliveroo does not cover riders medical and insurance. You have to get your own insurance coverage for food delivery.
