The Glass Onion Review | Fusion Western-Japanese Cuisine

August 08, 2018

If you are into fusion cuisine, this restaurant provides a healthy mix of Western and Japanese dishes. Located along the street of bencoolen, The Glass Onion offers high quality food at an reasonable pricing. The place looks inviting and cozy. The server explained the menu and recommended a few dishes. We took up her suggestion and it didn't took long for the dishes to come.

Glass Onion Rings SGD 10
The glass onion rings were served first. The taste was amazing. It has this western flavour that we can't put our finger on. The mayonnaise dipping sauce was great too. It's sweet and slight lemony. The onion were sliced paper thin and this allow individual ring to soak up more seasoning. This dish was so addicting that we found ourself going back for more.

Hiroshima Oyster Croquette SGD 12
Hiroshima oyster croquette was another of our favorite. The oyster was heavily battered with panko and shaped like a fish stick. The thick coating helps the seafood to stay moist and retain most of it's flavour. It smells briny like the ocean. The oyster doesn't need extra seasoning ans it's delicious as it is. It's a very well executed dish considering the fact that it's hard to maintain the freshness of seafood.

Grilled Harami - Grilled Wagyu Beef SGD 20
Grilled harami falls below our expectation. For an appetizer to cost almost as much as the main course, we assume that it would be better. Yes, the cut of meat may be expensive but it didn't help that the meat was chewy. Nonetheless, what we like about this dish was the grilled flavour and the salty-sweet sauce.

Togarashi Pork Belly Pasta SGD 16

Togarashi pork belly pasta is a new dish that was added to the menu not too long ago. The pasta was peppery, sweet and slightly spicy.
It's an acquired taste that you either hate or like it. The dish was topped with thick slices of pork belly and the meat was bouncy and juicy. The charred, grilled mark helps to mask the pork odor and the meat was extremely flavorful.

A5 Japanese Wagyu Ribcap SGD 39

Lastly, the most costly dish arrives - A5 Japanese Wagyu Ribcap. It's expensive and mediocre at the very best. Even though the meat was succulent, we find no reason to pay so much for so little meat. The sauce was alright and the potato salad was watery. We were sad as we didn't expect it to turn out like this (We even embarrassed ourself when we requested the steak to be medium-rare).

In conclusion, great start but disappointing ending. The fried onion and oyster completely overshadowed the rest of the dishes. The beef (which we looked forward the most) was lackluster and overpriced. It's a shame because the dinning experience was good. Considering that The Glass Onion seems to always have lunch and dinner special, it could be a great place to hang out and eat.
