Situated near the intersection between Clarke Street and Read Street, this restaurant caught our attention with their catchy name and extensive menu. Since FoodNinja Team was in the mood for some fried fish, we decided to give this one a try.
The restaurant was deserted and empty yet the service was fast and choppy. The auntie that was taking our order seemed distracted and was not eager to get some customers (i.e. us). We ordered our food in a hurry and she left coldly together with the menu card. The food arrived quickly and we snapped up the food before it turned cold.
Light Batter Mushrooms ( SGD 14 ++) |
When this dish was placed down at our table, we were quite disappointed as we were expecting to see "whole" mushroom (not mushrooms cut into quarter). Typically the case of how deep fried mushrooms are served at other restaurants. For the money we paid for this appetizer, it feels like being robbed and cheated. Nonetheless, the mushroom tasted and smelled fresh. It's best with a drizzle of lemon juice and tartar sauce. Be quick to finish or the batter will turn soggy.
Hot and Spicy Wings (SGD 15++) |
The wings was a delight and it's even better with a cold glass of beeer. It's crispy, flavorful and the meat was juicy. Although the chicken wing was delicious, I felt that it wasn't spicy or saucy enough. Rather misleading to call it 'Hot and Spicy Wings'. Nonetheless, it's the perfect side dish to go along with some liquor/wine.
Signature Cod Fish & Chips (SGD 24) |
On to the highlight of the meal, their signature cod fish & chips was a well-rounded dish. The cod was fresh, flaky and meaty. The fish did not lose it's moisture even with the frying. Like any other fish & chip, it pairs very well with tartar sauce and lemon juice. It was accompanied with lightly seasoned fries and roman lettuce salad. Overall, a well executed, basic fish & chip but I didn't get the wow factor I look out for in a "signature" dish.
Signature Halibut Fish & Chips (SGD 25) |
To try out the different fishes we got the same main course but chose a different type of fish. When we bite down the meat, a waft of unpleasant smell hit my nose. When I look at the cross section of the halibut, I immediately notice the black-brownish spot. That is the blood vein of the fish. In culinary school, students were taught to remove the blood vein as it gives off an unpleasant smell which affect greatly the taste of the fish. I would advise the chef here to do the same as it can send the wrong message that the fish is rotten/spoiled.
It wasn't as moist as the cod fish too. If I were to revisit the place again, I would choose cod over halibut.
Overall, we had a rather neutral stand on Catch Beer and Batter. The dinning would have been so much enjoyable if not for the lady. I left the place thinking that I could have gone to a different place and spend my money wiser. Nonetheless, it's a great place to chill, relax and chit chatting with family, friends and colleagues.
