Full Review at Dal-In 2 Korean Restaurant | 21 Amoy St

December 21, 2017

FoodNinjaSG Team visited Dal-In 2, a Korean stone bbq sashimi restaurant located on 21 Amoy Street. Despite its confusing name which seems to encompass all types of cooking, the FoddNinjaSG team was pleasantly surprised by the place. FoodNinjaSG came to know this restaurant upon a recommendation from a friend. We could say that the food, service and ambience were very much the same in Korea. FoodNinjaSG team had thoroughly enjoyed the food and what brought the dinning experience to a meaningful level was when the lady boss came personally to prepare our meat while explaining how to cook and eat it.

Upon entering, the place might seem as if it has been running for many years. The old posters, faded painting, dim light and the wooden chair enhances the effect of a run down eatery, making it look very authentic and believable.

The starter of every Korean meal is the side dishes known as banchan. At Dal-In 2, the banchan is not only complimentary but also refillable. What we like about this place is that we do not need to ask for second serving, the server will just refill them similar to how they refill your water. My favourite were the fish cake (odeng), pickled cabbage (kimchi) and potato salad (gamja salad).

Seafood Pancake (SGD 22)

Seafood Pancake (Haemul Pajeon) is one of the favorite dishes to order when the team visits a Korean restaurant. It is crispy and chewy at the same time. Flavourful yet clean tasting. It would be better if the seafood were more prominent in the pancake as the taste of the seafood was not really pronounced.

Korean Rice Wine (SGD 19)

We ordered the Korean Rice Wine to accompany our meal. Nothing beats liquor on a cold and raining day. The korean rice wine (makgeolli)  is sweet, creamy yet tastes refreshing which is best to be drank while eating the pancake.

Korean Steamed Egg (Free Service)

It was very kind of the lady boss to serve us free steamed egg (gyeran jjim). The steamed egg was silky and fluffy. It’s a very simple dish that needed just chicken stock and fish sauce to taste right. A great additional to the table.

Spicy Beef Soup (SGD 18)

We ordered korean spicy beef soup (yukgaejanga) to go along with our barbecue later. The portion was huge and the bowl was filled with vegetables, glass noodles and beef strips. It looks spicy but I couldn’t detect any spiciness at all. A hearty soup that goes well with a bowl of warm rice.

Grilled Pork Belly BBQ (SGD 18)

When the grill was hot enough, the lady boss came and began cooking the pork belly. It felt extra special because the meat was cooked right in front of us. She made sure that the meat was cook right and to the right crispness.

In the video, the lady boss is showing us how to enjoy grilled pork belly bbq (samgyupsal). The wrap was absolutely delicious. The vegetables enclosed in the wrap takes away the greasiness of the pork belly and every bite was a burst of different flavours.

Soy Bean Paste Stew (Free Service)

While we were enjoying the pork belly wrap, the lady boss returned with a sizzinging bowl of soybean paste stew (doenjang-jjigae). This was unexpected as we did order spicy beef soup just earlier. She later explained that she wanted us to truly experience how it is like to enjoy a korean bbq like how a korean would enjoy it.

At first there was some hesitation as there has been a stigma that soybean paste stew is smelly. However after trying, we was taken back by how much we actually enjoy the stew. It doesn’t smell, it's extremely tasty and it goes perfectly with the pork belly wrap. Thanks to the lady boss, I am now a soybean paste lover.

Marinated Short Rib Beef (SGD 30)

Moving on to the last course of the meal, the server changed our grill and the lady boss started cooking the marinated short rib beef (Gal-Bi). The beef soaks the marinate like a sponge and it is so flavourful. Even when the meat was left on the grill for a while, it still maintains its juiciness and tenderness. The slight charredness from the open flame gives that fragrant barbecue flavour.

Melon Ice Cream (Free Service)

Before we left, the lady boss gave us a melon stick to soothe our stomach. The light tasting ice cream cleanses our palate and washes away the lingering barbecue taste. It was the perfect dessert to end the meal.

For those who want to experience authentic korean casual dining experience, FoodNinjaSG highly recommend this place. Similar to other lessons in life, be nice to those people who are serving you and they will return back with care and excellent service... Although, one should note that the dishes was a bit on the pricey end, but for an excellent and thoughtful service, paying the extra seems worthwhile.
