Soup Spoon is known to serve a wide variety of soup, but did you know that it offers other food selection too? Today, I happen to drop by one of their outlet, The Soup Spoon Union, an open kitchen restaurant, located at Waterway Point.
From what I know, Soup Spoon has always been mainly selling soups with bread. However, this was not the case when we visited. The Soup Spoon Union outlet. They had a more extensive menu which consisted of appetizers, soup, salad, sides, set courses and main courses. The menu is similar to the standard kind of menu you get in any restaurant, which was different from regular Soup Spoon outlets. To grow Soup Spoon bigger, making the decision to increase the variety of food serve was definitely a way to attract more diners.

Complimentary ice water could be found next to the cashier. However, if you prefer other types of beverages, the restaurant sells drinks that you can buy to accompany your meal. Pre-chilled packaged soup could also be found on the top deck of the display chiller. To me, it’s a little steep in pricing though.

For the sides, I felt that the cauliflower rice was mediocre as it tasted too healthy for my taste and it had a strong uncooked cauliflower smell.
As for the salad, it was only slightly above average. The salad comes with different types of assorted vegetable such as edamame, cherry tomato, cucumber and iceberg lettuce. The salad was accompanied with a sesame oil vinaigrette dressing. A good salad should open one’s appetite. However, I find that the dressing was a little too overpowering for me. I prefer a lightly seasoned dressing. This way I can enjoy the nature flavour of the mixed greens.

As for the steak, it was executed perfectly. As I chew through the meat, the aroma of the herb just perfumed in my mouth. However, the meat wasn’t as tender as I thought it should be. Nonetheless, it was a good steak. It was well seared, well marinated and well cooked.
Japanese Wild Caught Salmon Served with Ponzu Miso Sauce (SGD 16.80 ++) |

The other main that was chosen by my companion was the Japanese Wild Caught Salmon served with Ponzu Miso Sauce. For the sides, she had chosen the basil pesto pasta and herbivore salad. For the pasta, the chef uses basil pesto that comes from a bottle. I felt a little disheartening as I love pesto pasta. The pasta takes on a dull dark green look and it does not look inviting to eat. However, it still tasted great and it was finished.
The salmon was the most disappointing. I believe that if you were to serve salmon with skin intact, it must be crispy.. A soggy crust is a displeasing mouthfeel. In addition, the salmon was fishy and was slightly overcooked to my liking. Fortunately, the ponzu miso sauce mellow out the fishy smell.
The soup was loaded with ingredients and I loved it. For meat lover like me, the amount of beef in the soup was satisfying. In addition, the soup contained carrots, onions, celery, mushroom and eggplant making it very hearty to drink. It’s my favorite soup so far by The Soup Spoon
Even though the salmon was below par, I would definitely come back for the angus steak and the beef goulash soup.
