Talay Kata Lunch Buffet Review | Seafood Mookata at Orchard Central | Thai Steamboat & Barbeque

October 01, 2017

On a bright Sunday Afternoon, my cravings for Mookata were too strong. Looking at all the wide spread of options I have through social media and food apps, I decided to head down to Talay Kata @ Orchard Central as it focuses largely on huge spread of seafood for BBQ which was something I am craving for.

My first impression was the polite service from their staff as they were very helpful and had a smile on their faces at all time. The place was clean, inviting and lively. The dinning area was quickly filled up with starving customer and food was going at a rapidly speed. It's not a surprise since Talay Kata is one of the cheaper buffet selection in town.

Before I was directed to my table, I saw the wide variety of seafood they had displayed in the counter chiller. Offering from flower crab to mussels to prawns to fish and even crayfish. Among all the seafood, my favorite was the crayfish which is good in both barbecue and steamboat

The waiter further explained the types of soup that was provided such as chicken, Tom yum and more. To add on, the waiter also shared light on how the concept of the restaurant came about which not only showed that they were good at serving customers and even to knowledgeable about the restaurant. Out of the choices of soup, I choose the Tom Yum soup and decided to kick off my buffet journey.

Starting off, I headed towards the cooked food section which features a few hot dishes such as fried rice, creamy prawns, basil pork and fish soup. The fried rice had a balanced taste, just enough savoriness and the fragrance permeates through the station. For the fish soup, the texture of the fish was soft yet slick. The food that were cooked are almost as comparable to the ones I have ate in Thailand. Try tasting one mouth of the food I mentioned above and you would definitely agree with me.

There are also other fried appetisers that you can try out on the other station while waiting for the grill to cook your food. There is even a DIY Som Tum station with a small instruction on the side that you can follow to make your own  Som Tum - not only just eating thai food but also a cultural experience.

Now talking about the main show for the buffet - the BBQ. It is set up with the traditional mookata pan with the steamboat on the side. You would definitely need to use the pork lard to il the grill pan so that the meat will not only not stick on the pan, the meat can also get the extra flavour from the pork lard. The adjustable vacuum above the grill pan to remove smoke from the grill pan has left me feeling amazed and impressed as it was really efficient at removing the smoke However, honestly speaking, I felt that the meat and seafood could have tasted better if it was marinated.

There was also an assortment of vegetables that you can put into your soup for extra flavour.

What brings out the place is the desserts corner and the various sauces that were being offered. Their thick red ruby and their house blend tea is the highlight of the dessert section as they compliments really well with the grilled food. Other than the two, you can also find eclairs and even sweet tapioca desserts at this section.

All in all, it was a pleasant experience to dine at Talay Kata. With their wide range of food and the set up of their buffet could show that there was a huge effort put into the restaurants by the owners. Not only just providing a simple buffet, they also provide premium a la carte menus and beers at an affordable price! Once they brush up their marinated meat section, I would definitely go there for another round of Mookata.

Overall, a one 'Give it a try' NInja Star
